In honor of Veteran's Day this week, my post for Wordless Wednesday is a collage of my husband's family veterans, including him.
Clockwise, from the top left: Richard Rufus Bean, Civil War serving from Iowa; John Whitmore, Civil War, serving from Illinois. Medal of Honor Recipient; anonymous cousin who served two tours in Iraq, came home safely; our son Greg, Desert Storm era, Somalia; my husband Jim. Vietnam era; Jim's dad Loren, World War II, aboard Cape Esperance during Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Thanks to all who serve and their families who support them!
You never know what you are going to find when you start going through the family pictures. This picture had been in my grandpa Yates' possession for probably 60 years before I ever saw it. For whatever reason, my family just didn't get out the old pictures and talk about the people that were in them.
This is a photo of my Great-great Grandfather (on the left) James Knox Polk Yates, and his son Gideon Yates. I imagine that JKP Yates probably made the coffin for his son. I don't know what Gideon's cause of death was, but to me, this photo speaks volumes about my family.
So much for Wordless Wednesday, huh?
Photo taken 01 May 2007 - The pink bush is a flowering almond and the flowers below are creeping phlox. I know this is suppose to be "wordless", but the flowering almond plant is a start off a plant that was an old established plant (probably from the 1930's or before) in our yard when I was growing up in Tumwater, Washington. That was back in the 1950's. My mother gave my sister-in-law Kathy a start off the plant in the 1970's. Kathy had always told me that she would give me a start off the 'heritage' plant when I had a place I wanted to put it. That was two years ago... That flowering almond comes from pretty sturdy stock, doesn't it?
If you look right above Australia, you can see where the plate boundaries are and why there was a big quake in the Solomon Islands, as well as the Loyalty Islands. Map from the USGS site. Click on the map to see the full-sized image.
This may look like a painting, but it is really a photograph. I found it on Webshots, and just loved it so much that I had to "have" it. The artist is Diana Wiersema.
