"In my day". I hear and think that a lot these days when I talk to my friends and family. Barring all the Cold War worries, growing up in the 50's was a fairly idyllic experience. At least it was for me. Times at home had their challenges, but we were kids and we suffered through as best we could.
We have a joke in our family that we had to "walk 10 miles to school, uphill both ways". In truth, I had to walk a half mile to my gradeschool Peter G. Schmidt in Tumwater, WA. It was neither up or downhill, just a long walk on any day. Sometimes though, if I had some extra change I would walk a little further down Old Highway 99 to the Hostess Wonderbread Store after school, or on weekends. What a wonderful place to have available for a kid! If I was out riding my bike, I could stop in there and get something to snack on!
Some of my favorite things to buy were the Hostess pies, the spice cakes, Twinkies, and chocolate cake snacks. All of them were just the right size for a snack, and I think my favorite was the spice cakes with the gooey white frosting on top. Everything was always fresh and we were welcome customers even though we were kids.
When I was out dropping Entrecards today, I happened to visit Merry's Kitchen on my route, and her last post was about Twinkies and how much she loves them. I like them too, but I never seem to buy them. Maybe once a year I will buy something from Hostess, but it just isn't the same. Why, you ask?
After discussing it with friends, we have come to the conclusion that even Hostess bakery items have gone stale. Not on the shelf, but in general. The icings are all waxy, and the cakes are very dry and tasteless. I don't think it has anything to do with my age or losing my tastebuds. It is just that Hostess is one of many food companies that is willing to sacrifice flavor and quality in order to make a profit. I imagine they even put high fructose corn syrup in their baked goods too. The next time you eat a Hostess cupcake notice how waxy that frosting looks and tastes.
So, I think I can say with some qualification that my Hostess items were much better than what they sell today. For a little while, life was good and I had my cake and could eat it too. Yum!
