It may be sound a bit premature, but I have a great idea to save money and your melons at the same time. The ground may still be cool at this early date, but keep this idea in mind for when your squash and melons begin to set fruit this summer.
Here's my thought:
Instead of buying a set of six from a gardening supply company for $9.95+tax and shipping, why not buy some round plastic fast food baskets to use instead? If you're worred about them being lifted by the wind (in my opinion it seems highly unlikely) The price for the ones listed on Amazon is $5.99 for a 12 pack of 8" baskets. In looking at the site where these are listed their shipping costs are much higher than I would pay, so consider the above link just an example.
Bottom line, I know you can pick these up in super stores and probably local grocery stores when picnic time comes around. You might even have some just languishing in your storage bins. In any case, think beyond the product you see in a catalog and imagine using something you can get more inexpensively that would do just as well. Happy Spring Everyone! Keep it Organic!
