Weekends are filled with chores and jobs around the house that didn't get done during the rest of the week. Either we're working or tired, sick or just not inclined...either way we get to the end of the weekend and Sunday night rolls around, which signals to us that we can get into our sweats or PJ's and relax for the rest of the evening. If we eat dinner early enough there's enough time for us to have popcorn and pop for a treat while we watch our favorite shows.
Jim gets out all the needed supplies and the popcorn popper, with big bowls to hold our treat. It's quite a production because it has to be done "just so" for the maximum enjoyment. Jim's from Iowa so he has good taste in corn for popping. (That's not all Iowa grows, and no, he never lived on a farm!) he did work at a corn processing plant, but that's a whole other story. Back to the routine...Jim gets out a huge bowl for him which probably holds a couple batches of popped corn. He makes a smaller bowl full for me. He melts butter and then drizzles it over both bowls, adding a little salt for mine and maybe a bit more for his.
Just to get the sweet and savory taste, and if it was summer, and we had a machine snow cone maker, maybe that would be part of the tradition: Popcorn first followed by snow cones! Winter time is when we have a soda or even just water with the popcorn though.
Last week signaled a possible disruption to our Sunday night popcorn nibbies...our microwave popper heated up so much it melted the silicone mat I have on the micro tray. It's because our turntable inside quit working and so things just sat there and get hot. Yikes! Tonight the silicone will come out and just the glass tray will be sufficient. It's entirely possible we might have to buy a new popcorn popper soon. You know what I'm talking about and you can see products here.
