"Hi Carol, What have you been doing lately?"...
So, say I'm at a party with one of my contemporaries and of course everyone wants updates on what we have all been doing lately. Most of the people I know use their computers at work, but they don't maintain them. In fact, most of the people I know just plain hate their computers or tell me 'well, I'm a computer dummy'. Uh, me too...but, my conversations might run a little *differently.
Don't think I'm trying to act all smug here, but I'm the "mother" of two computers in this household, which means that I not only use them, but I keep them defragged, debugged, degunked, etc. I have helper programs like FileHippo Update Checker that scans my computers for new program updates so I don't have to go around to hundreds of sites doing it. Today, my alert told me I needed to update Java. Ok, no problem, I've done that for years. Easy as pie, right? Wrong! I could not get the latest version of Java to install all the way. I kept getting this error message of Error 25099: Unzipping core files failed.
My solution to problems like that is to Google the problem and see if a result shows up in a forum. I got lucky and found mine in Java.net Forums. As it turned out, the problem was that even though I thought I had gotten rid of the old Java version, it was not completely gone and I had to go into Window's Explorer, find the folder for Java, find the subfolder for jre6, and delete the files in there. Here's the full reply from one of the members in the forum:
I would make sure the %ProgramFiles%\Java\jre6\ and %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_10\ directories are empty.
Are any of the Java files still in use? Try rebooting or using ProcessExplorer to find files that are still running out of the jre6 directory.
That's what I did and then Java installed in a snap. I just have to laugh though...can you imagine me answering that first question with, "I was having trouble with my Java today so I had to dump part of it and get a new one". We live in the original Starbuck's area. They'd think I was talking about my coffee not being any good!
