Maki at Dosh Dosh asks some good questions about this topic of feed count. I am going to give my answers, for what they're worth.--webduck
“Why do you display (or not display) the Feed Count for your blog?“.
[Duck] I put a feed count on my blog because I thought it was 'the thing to do'. Just this week though, I had been thinking of taking it off because it just didn't reflect my readership in the right way.
The way I have gotten more readers is to have a presence in many different places. In my "previous online life" I did a lot of genealogical research and met a lot of people that way. So when I began blogging, I included a link to my blog Pentimento in my email signatures. I send out a family newsletter quarterly; I post a lot on Gather and include my blog address in some of the posts if it is appropriate; I look at blogs and vote on Spicy Page. Those are just a few of the things I do.
The main thing I do is reciprocate when I can. I try to be friendly and genuine. I use my manners and say "thank you" when someone does something for me, no matter how big or small.
