Sometimes, it can be so gratifying to share genealogy. Especially when it is with one of the younger generations. I got an email today from one of my husband's cousins, and truthfully, I didn't recognize the name at first. I mean, I got him mixed up with another cousin close to his age, because their names are spelled similarly. In any case, it was a nice surprise, and I think beneficial for both of us.
This cousin is studying the Civil War era and he knows that one of his ancestors, his 3rd Great Grandfather John Whitmore, was a Medal of Honor recipient in that war. I was able to send him a picture of his grandfather, the MOH stone the MOH Historical Society arranged to have put on his grave, and John's biographical history. My husband and I have worked on compiling our family history just for occasions like this. Eventually, I am going to get a book together for the Wilkerson family. Maybe by this summer if we go to Iowa for a reunion.
It makes it so worthwhile to be able to share the really interesting family history with everyone. It has been decades of hard work, but days like today make it all worth it.
