Link: United States Newspapers. One of the really useful tools I use when I am doing my family genealogy is to check newspapers for obituaries or news items. Many times, I have been able to add the obit, and I have found other names in it that fill in the blanks in the family tree. Many times, it is impossible to find the married names of the family daughters unless you find an obituary or a will. It is always possible that it is the most recent marriage for someone, but at least it gives you a starting point.
I was thinking about this today because the widow of one of my Barnett cousins died and my brother saw the death notice in the paper where he lives. I talked to this lady many, many times in the last few years since my mother died, and I knew she was a very private person. It is probable that she will not be having a funeral, and her kids probably won't tell me she passed away, so death notices in newspapers can be the only way you find these things out. Rest in peace Edith. I will miss you.
