MY TOP 10 PLACES TO FIND GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION ONLINE
1. Ancestry --- Paid site, but there are some free databases you can search
2. American Memory – from the Library of Congress.
3. Your local library – Some libraries have a link to Heritage Quest (paid site) as a community service.
4. Cyndi’s List —Genealogical sites on the Internet. I like this site, but it is sometimes hard to navigate when you are in a hurry
5. USGenWeb --- FREE! Go to the main USGW page and click on the state you want
6. Rootsweb --- Committed to free genealogy. If you are just beginning your genealogical research, I would suggest getting on a mailing list for the location where your families lived. Not just the state, but if you know the county, even better. Also, try checking the message boards for your surnames. Added advice: Post specific information such as: SMITH, John b. 1803 Clay Co., TN, not “looking for John Smith”.
7. Land Patent Search --- BLM GLO records. They provide image access to more than two million Federal land title records for Eastern Public Land States, issued between 1820 and 1908.
8. OAC--- Online Archive of California
9. The Genealogy Home Page --- What's Really New in WWW Genealogy Pages
10. Tracing Our Roots --- By Brenda Kellow, B.A., CG
These are not the only places I search, but I find myself going back to them time and again. Also, try looking at the LDS Family Search site, but be aware that some files are submitted and not proven.
